This book and the sequels are adventures in growing up. The boys have been chosen by the rings to be Guardians, and that they will be sent to parallel worlds where they will have to correct things that are going wrong. But it will only be in their minds as they will be in the body of someone native to that planet. It seems that not all worlds developed the same way, and the boys learn this on their adventures. The situations on other worlds and on Earth are done with adventure and humor as the boys learn about themselves and life , and what friendships and teamwork are. The rings have a side effect as well. The boys become more focused, more athletic and far more observant. As the characters develop, the adventures get more complicated and they grow up more and more each time, especially Doc.
